MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - UW-Eau Claire women's basketball forward Courtney Lewis (Sr.-Prairie du Chien, WI), men's track and field thrower Roger Steen (Sr.-Luck, WI) and women's track and field sprinter Carly Fehler (Sr.-Oak Creek, WI) have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.
Lewis finished the regular season in strong fashion as the Blugolds posted two home conference wins to earn the No. 2 seed in the WIAC tournament. In a 69-64 win over UW-River Falls, Lewis posted a game-high 27 points and five assists to go along with six rebounds, while playing 33 minutes. Lewis made 7-of-13 field goal attempts, including a perfect three-of-three from the three-point line and 10-of-10 free throws. Her point total was one point shy of tying her career high of 28 points at UW-Platteville on Feb. 13, 2013. In a 64-61 victory over UW-Oshkosh, Lewis again lead both teams with 25 points, 11 rebounds and one steal to go along with two assists and one blocked shot, while playing all 40 minutes. Lewis made 5-of-12 field goal attempts, connecting on three-of-three three-point field goals and 12-of-14 free throws. For the week, Lewis averaged 26 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists making 12-of-25 (.480) field goals, six-of-six three-point field goals and 22-of-24 (.917) free throws. Lewis is currently tied for 20th on the Blugold all-time scoring list with 948 career points.
Steen won the shot put by breaking his own school record set just two weeks ago at the Big Dog Invitational hosted by UW-Stevens Point. He won the event with a throw of 59-5 (18.11 meters) which was four feet and two inches farther than his next closest competitor. The toss broke Steen’s own school record of 58-6 3/4 (17.85 meters) set two weeks ago at the Pointer Invitational also hosted by UW-Stevens Point. Steen currently ranks second nationally in the shot put. It is the second time this season Steen has earned WIAC Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Fehler won the 60-meter dash by breaking her own school record in the process and helping the 4 x 200-meter relay to a first-place finish at the Big Dog Invitational hosted by UW-Stevens Point. She won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.74, but it was her preliminary time of 7.70 that set the school record. Prior to the meet, Fehler had set the school record of 7.73 on March 14, 2014 at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Lincoln, Neb. Her time in the 60-meter dash currently ranks second in the nation. Fehler was also a member of the 4 x 200-meter relay team that earned first place honors with a time of 1:43.65. It is the second time this season Fehler has earned WIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors.
