2014-15 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 12 (Nov. 10-16)

Football

Defense:  Kaeleb Stangler, Inside Linebacker, Freshman, 6-1, 216, Rochester, MN/John Marshall

Stangler made the most of his first start of the year as the Blugolds fell to UW-La Crosse 20-10 in the season finale for both teams.  Entering the game with six unassisted tackle for the entire season, Stangler led both teams with eight total tackles, seven of which were solo.  Stangler also recorded his first sack of the season.  It was one of five total sacks for the Blugold defense that held the Eagles to 94 total passing yards.

Offense:  Jon Van Geffen, Running Back, Senior, 5-8, 191, Shiocton, WI

On a cold and snowy day, Jon Van Geffen saved his best for last as the senior played his best statistical game of the year in a 20-10 setback to UW-La Crosse.  Entering the game with 86 total rushing yards on 25 attempts for the season, Van Geffen carried the ball 35 times for 175 yards including his first touchdown of the season.  His rushing total was more than any other Blugold ball carrier had totaled for the entire season besides Riley Gebelien, who had 230 yards rushing for the season entering the game.  The single-game rushing total was the fourth-best total by a WIAC running back this season trailing UW-La Crosse’s Ben Hertrampf (234 yards vs UW-Eau Claire 11/15/14) and UW-Platteville’s Andy Puccini (202 yards against Dubuque 9/13/14 and 176 yards against UW-La Crosse 11/8/14)

Special Teams:  Parker LeMire, Kicker, Junior, 5-11, 178, Somerset, WI

LeMire kicked a season-long 32-yard field goal as the Blugolds fell to UW-La Crosse in the season finale 20-10.  On a cold and snowy day, LeMire made his lone field goal attempt of the day in addition to his only point-after touchdown attempt of the day.




Women’s Basketball

Courtney Lewis, Forward, Senior, 5-10, Prairie du Chien, WI

Lewis helped lead the Blugolds to a 2-0 record this past weekend at the UW-Eau Claire Tip-Off Classic defeating Coe College (IA) 61-54 and Hamline University (MN) 78-50.  Against Coe Lewis posted a game-high 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three offensive rebounds and two steals.  Lewis made six-of-13 field goal attempts including three-of-three from the three-point and free throw line.  In a 78-50 win over Hamline recorded a game-best eight assists and four steals to go along with 10 points and five rebounds.  Lewis made four-of-six field goal attempts and went a perfect two-of-two from the free throw line.  Lewis averaged 14 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals a game shooting 52.6% (10-19) from the floor, 100% from the three-point (3-3) and free throw (5-5) line and posted a 4.7/1 assist-to-turnover ratio.


Men’s Hockey

Rob Andersen, Forward, 5-10, Senior, River Falls, WI

Anderson scored three points for the ninth-ranked Blugolds defeating Hamline University (MN) 5-2 and Bethel University (MN) 6-3 playing at home for the first time this season.  Down 2-0 against Hamline, the Blugolds went on to score the last five goals of the game in which Andersen assisted on the game’s final goal at 13:01 of the third period.  Against Bethel Andersen scored two goals and assisted on another.  Andersen broke a 1-1 tie with his first goal of the game at 9:40 of the first period.  Tied at 3-3, Andersen scored the eventual game-winning goal at 14:35 of the second period short-handed, his second short-handed goal of the season.  Andersen lead the Blugolds in points (7), goals (4) and assists (3) for the season.




Women’s Hockey

Paige Dale, Forward, Sophomore, 5-6, Andover, MN

Dale led the Blugolds in goals scored as they opened conference play against ninth-ranked UW-Superior.  In a 5-3 loss to the Yellowjackets on Friday, November 14 Dale scored two of the Blugolds’ three goals, the first coming at 16:11 of the second period off a power play and the second coming at 19:44 of the third period.  For the season Dale lead the team in points (3) and goals (3).




Wrestling

Ryan Behnke, Sophomore, 165 pounds, Bruce, WI

Behnke recorded pins in two dual meets at 165 pounds this past week.  Against St. Olaf College (MN) Behnke pinned William Collins at 4:13.  The following night Behnke pinned Parker Knueppel of UW-Oshkosh at 3:44.  Behnke recorded the only two pins made by the Blugolds for the week.  With both wins Behnke improved his season record to 5-4.
