2014-15 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 4 (Sept. 15-21)

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - A total of 10 UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the fourth week of the 2014-15 season.

Football

Offense: Lucas Emmerich, Tight End, 6-5, 235, Junior, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial
Competing at 20th-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) on Saturday, Emmerich led the Blugolds in receiving with nine catches for 71 yards. He is currently second on the team this season, averaging 49 receiving yards per game.

Defense: Jayden Dobbs, Outside Linebacker, 6-1, 227, Junior, Athens, Wis.
Starting at outside linebacker at 20th-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) on Saturday, Dobbs finished with four solo tackles, including two for a loss, while breaking up one pass.


Women’s Tennis

Singles: Brooke Volpone, Freshman, Monticello, Minn.
Volpone won singles draw No. 7 at the Gustie Fall Invite by going 4-0 this weekend.  Volpone defeated Gabby Queenan of Macalester 7-6 (4), 6-3, Shannon Hautzinger of Grinnell 6-0, 6-3, Catilin Fitzgerald of UW-Whitewater 3-6, 6-3, 10-5, and in the title match, she defeated Sam Fleming of UW-La Crosse 1-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Doubles: Renee Nelson, Senior, Madison, Wis./La Follette & Olivia Gallagher, Sophomore, Lodi, Wis.
Nelson and Gallagher won the consolation doubles draw No. 1 at the Gustie Fall Invite this weekend. They started with an 8-1 win over Luther opponents and then won two more to advance to the championship. In the title match, they picked up an 8-5 victory over Carroll opponents.


Volleyball

Offense: Jenna Smits, Setter, 5-8, Junior, Green Bay, Wis./Preble
Smits led the Blugolds in set assists with 144 (11.08 per set) this weekend as the team went 3-1 hosting the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament. She helped lead the Blugolds’ balanced offensive attack, which finished with a .233 team hitting percentage. Against St. Norbert, Smits had a career-best 45 set assists to lead the match. Smits also recorded 29 digs and had two blocks (one solo, one assist) along with six service aces, second most on the team. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the weekend.

Defense: Jamie Dimka, Defensive Specialist/Libero, 5-7, Junior, Wausau, Wis./East
Leading the Blugolds with 88 digs in three matches, Dimka helped guide the team to a 3-1 record this weekend, hosting the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament. In the final match of the weekend against St. Norbert, she had a career-high 36 digs, which also tied for sixth most in school history and the most since Lauren Sutherland finished with 38 against UW-Platteville on Oct. 29, 2011. Dimka also had two service aces and five set assists.


Women’s Golf

Emily Stone, Senior, Eden Prairie, Minn.
Stone helped lead the Blugolds to a second place finish out of 13 teams after two rounds of competition at the UW-Whitewater Fall Invitational this weekend. She finished with 161 strokes to come in sixth place.


Men’s Cross Country

Josh Thorson, Sophomore, Wayzata, Minn.
Thorson was UW-Eau Claire’s top runner as the Blugolds opened the season Saturday at the St. Olaf Invitational. Thorson ran a patient race, passing through the 4,800-meter mark in 15:10, and then finished strong, closing his final 3,200 meters in 9:46 to finish second out of 246 runners in an 8,000-meter and person-best time of 24:57. He was less than four seconds behind the winner, Grant Wintheiser from St. Olaf, who was third at nationals a season ago. As a team, the Blugolds took second place with 56 points while the University of Sioux Falls, a nationally-ranked NCAA Division II school won the meet with 49 points. The Blugolds finished in front of St. Olaf, which is currently ranked No. 1 in Division III and the defending national champion, by five points.


Women’s Cross Country

Lucy Ramquist, Junior, River Falls, Wis.
Ramquist was UW-Eau Claire’s top runner at the St. Olaf Invitational, where the Blugolds opened the season Saturday. She finished 17th out of 264 runners with a 6,000-meter time of 23:28 to help lead the Blugolds to a fourth-place finish out of 16 teams.
