Men’s Basketball
Tyson Kalien, Guard, 6-1, 210, Junior, Chippewa
Falls, WI
The Blugolds’ leading scorer, Kalien recorded a career
high in points as UW-Eau Claire opened conference play this past
week. In a 64-50 loss at 23rd-ranked UW-Stevens
Point, Kalien scored nine points making two-of-six field goals
including two-of-three three-point field goal attempts and
three-of-four free throws. Kalien also recorded three
rebounds and two steals. In a 64-59 loss to UW-River Falls
Kalien tallied a career-best 22 points converting six-of-16 field
goals including four-of-11 three-point field goals and a perfect
six-of-six showing at the free throw line. Kalien also
recorded two steals and one rebound against the Falcons. For
the week Kalien averaged 15.5 points, two rebounds and two steals
per game shooting 8-of-22 (36.4%), six-of-14 (42.9%) from the
three-point line and nine-of-ten (90%) from the free throw
line.
Women’s Basketball
Madison Johnson, Forward, 6-2, Junior, Osceola,
WI
Johnson had a solid week for the Blugolds who split two
conference games this past week. In a 59-53 loss to
UW-Stevens Point Johnson scored seven points while grabbing three
rebounds. Johnson made three-of-eight field goals while going
one-for-three from the free throw line. In a 59-36 road
victory at UW-River Falls Johnson scored 13 points, hauled in seven
rebounds, three coming on the offensive end, and added one
assist. Johnson made five-of-10 field goals, two-of-two
three-point field goals and made her only free throw attempt.
For the week Johnson averaged 10 points and five rebounds per game
making eight-of-18 (44.4%), two-of-four (50%) three-point field
goals and two-of-four (50%) free throws.
Men’s Hockey
Jay Deo, Goalkeeper, 5-8, 166, Sophomore, Langley,
British Columbia
Deo was impressive in goal as the Blugolds recorded their
first conference victory of the season. In a 4-1 victory over
UW-Superior Deo played all 60 minutes saving 38-of-39 shots
faced. It was the fewest goals allowed by Deo in a game this
season and it was also the most saves Deo has recorded in five
appearances. Deo is 1-0-1 lifetime against the Yellowjackets
allowing 1.5 goals per game in those two contest.
Women’s Hockey
Paige Turner, Goalkeeper, 5-3, Junior, Iron River,
WI/Duluth East
Turner was a key component for the Blugolds who earned their
first WIAC conference point in two years in a weekend series with
six-ranked UW-Stevens Point. In a 3-3 tie with the Pointers
on December 5 Turner saved 37 shots playing all 65 minutes in
net. In a 2-1 loss at UW-Stevens Point the following night
Turner saved 45-of-47 shots between the pipes. It was the
fourth 40-plus save performance for Turner this season.
Wrestling
Justin Karkula, 275 pounds, Sophomore, Oshkosh,
WI/West
Karkula went 2-1 on the week and helped the Blugolds earn
their first two dual meet wins of the season. With the
Blugolds down 23-18 entering his match against Brandon Boyle of
UW-Platteville, Karkula pinned Boyle at 1:47 giving the Blugolds a
24-23 victory over the Pioneers. It was the first WIAC dual
meet victory since the Blugolds defeated UW-Platteville 24-16 on
January 12, 2011. At the Candlewood Suites Duals hosted by
UW-La Crosse Karkula went 1-1 for the day defeating Matt Kadrlik of
St. John’s (MN) by a 13-4 major decision and losing to Cole
Wilson of Southwest Minnesota State by fall at 2:23. Wilson
is the fourth-ranked wrestler in the nation among Division II
wrestlers at heavyweight. As a team the Blugolds defeated St.
John’s 25-21. The Johnnies are currently ranked
26th in the nation in the latest Intermat NCAA Division
III national poll.
