2014-15 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 22 (February 9-15)

Men’s Basketball

Lewis Mau, Guard, 6-4, 210, Senior, Colfax, WI
Mau played a key role for the Blugolds nearly posting two double-doubles in a pair of conference home wins.  In an 80-62 win over UW-Platteville Mau scored eight points hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds.  Mau also recorded three assists and one steal with no turnovers in 28 minutes.  In a 69-52 victory over UW-La Crosse Mau scored 10 points adding a game-high nine rebounds while adding two assists and two steals in 26 minutes of play.  For the week Mau averaged nine points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game connecting on six-of-16 field goals (.375), two-of-five three-point field goals (.400) and four-of-five (.800) free throws.


Men’s Hockey

Jay Deo, Goalie, 5-8, 166 pounds, Sophomore, Langley, British Columbia
Deo’s play in goal was a big factor for the Blugolds who split a weekend series over conference-leading UW-Stevens Point.  The Pointers are ranked third in the latest USCHO.com and D3hockey.com NCAA Division III national polls.  On Friday, February 13 Deo saved 45 shots as Eau Claire jumped out to 4-0 lead and held off Stevens Point for a 5-2 victory at Hobbs Ice Center.  The win snapped a five-game winning streak for the Pointers.  The following night Deo saved 38 shots but the Pointers scored five goals in a 5-2 home loss for the Blugolds.  For the weekend Deo saved 83-of-90 shots (.922) between the pipes in his first action in two weeks returning from a mild concussion.


Men’s Track and Field

Field:  Roger Steen, Throws, Senior, Luck, WI
Steen continues to impress in the both the shot put and the weight throw this season.  At the St. Thomas (MN) Invitational Steen won the shot put with a throw of 58-6 (17.83 meters).  Steen, currently ranked second nationally in the shot put, won the event with a throw nearly two feet farther than his next closest competitor.  Steen also won the weight throw with a toss of 57-2.25 (17.43 meters).  Steen’s throw was 4.5 feet farther than the next closest NCAA Division III competitor and second among WIAC throwers. 

Track:  Josh Thorson, Distance, Freshman, Plymouth, MN/Wayzata
Thorson broke a school record on his way to winning the 3,000-meter run at the St. Thomas (MN) Invitational.  Thorson won the race in a time of 8:17.90 breaking the school record of 8:20.53 set by Matt Scott on March, 1, 2014 at the WIAC Championships hosted by UW-Whitewater.  Thorson’s time currently ranks third nationally and is the top time in the WIAC.

Women’s Track and Field

Track:  Carly Fehler, Sprints, Senior, Oak Creek, WI
Fehler won two events and improved in the national rankings at the St. Thomas (MN) Invitational.  Fehler won the 60-meter dash posting a time of 7.73 seconds which is currently second in the nation and just .05 seconds off the fastest time in NCAA Division III.  Fehler also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.44 seconds.  Her time in the 200 also ranks second nationally.


Men’s Tennis

Andrew Dahl, Freshman, Fort Atkinson, WI
Dahl won two of three matches at #6 singles in dual meet action for the Blugolds.  On Sunday, February 15 Dahl defeated Lucas Nordiato of NCAA Division II St. Cloud State (MN) 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) and Perry Campbell of Macalester (MN) 6-3, 6-3.  The victory over Nordiato was one of two singles victories the Blugolds scored over the Huskies.  The night before Dahl lost to Zack Eckstein of 14th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus 6-1, 6-0.
