HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team closed its Spring Break trip with a 7-2 victory over Smith College (Mass.) today.
The Blugolds swept doubles competition and won four singles matches.
Mary Frassetto (So.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) and Lexi DeMario (So.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) teamed up at No. 3 doubles to record an 8-0 win while Taylor Heltne (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Katie Gillman (So.-Red Wing, Minn.) won 8-1 at No. 1. Gretchen Bachmeier (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) and Maddie Johnson (Fr.-Lakeville, Minn./South) won 8-3 in the No. 2 spot.
In singles, DeMario lost just one game at No. 6 as she won 6-1, 6-0. She finished the Spring Break trip undefeated as she won all four of her matches, dropping a total of only eight games.
Bachmeier won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 while Heltne picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1. Bachmeier closed the trip with two straight wins while Heltne won three in a row.
Gillman, who won all four of her matches on the trip, recorded a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 3.
Eau Claire is now 11-5 on the season.
Next Saturday the Blugolds will compete in two matches.
