Women's Tennis Edges Past Lawrence

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team handed Lawrence University (Wis.) its first loss of the season with a 5-4 victory today at the Olson Outdoor Courts.

The Blugolds recorded three wins in singles play and two victories in doubles to earn the overall team win. Gretchen Bachmeier (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) and Lexi DeMario (So.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) led the Eau Claire effort in singles, as each gave up two games or less in their respective No. 2 and No. 6 matches. Katie Gillman (So.-Red Wing, Minn.) earned the other singles win, defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, the No. 1 pair of Gillman and Taylor Heltne (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) teamed up to take down their challengers 8-1. Bachmeier and Maddie Johnson (Fr.-Lakeville, Minn./South) also claimed an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 match.

Eau Claire's season record boosts to 6-2 overall. The win also protected the Blugolds' 4-0 undefeated record at home this season.

The Blugolds return to the courts next Friday, Oct. 7 for a competition against UW-Stevens Point. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
