Women's Tennis Narrowly Falls in Spring Break Opener

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team fell just short to Allegheny College (Pa.) 5-4 to open Spring Break today.

A number of the matches were closely contested but the Blugolds came up short in three of them to help Allegheny to secure the win.

Lexi DeMario (So.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) and Mary Frassetto (So.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) claimed an 8-4 No. 3 doubles victory while the No. 1 doubles pair of Katie Gillman (So.-Red Wing, Minn.) and Taylor Heltne (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) fell just short 9-8.

In singles play, Gillman won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 while DeMario won 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot. Renee Nelson (Fr.-Madison, Wis./La Follette) also won at No. 5 with scores of 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.

After winning the opening set in the No. 4 spot, Maddie Johnson (Fr.-Lakeville, Minn./South) couldn't hold on and fell 2-6, 6-2, 10-4. Gretchen Bachmeier (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) also had a close No. 2 singles match but ended up falling 7-5, 7-6.

The Blugolds drop to 8-5 on the season while Allegheny improves to 4-4.

Tuesday the Blugolds will face Nebraska Wesleyan University at 11:30 a.m. Eastern.
