Men's Hockey Sweeps River Falls and Heads to Semifinals

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team knocked off the No. 9 UW-River Falls Falcons and eliminated them from the NCHA Peters Cup playoffs in a 2-1 overtime decision.

The Falcons scored the only goal of the first period at 7:38 putting the Falcons ahead of the Blugolds 1-0.

The Blugolds took charge in the second period outshooting the Falcons 9-1, but the Falcon goalie stayed strong and would not let the puck get past him.

Andrew McCabe (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) kept the Blugolds alive in the third period when he scored a goal from 20 feet in front of the Falcon goal to tie the game up 1-1.

After a tied third period, the game went into an overtime period.  The Falcons pulled their goalie with 1:20 remaining knowing that they had to win to continue on to a forced mini game.  Jordan Singer (So.-Lino Lake, Minn./Centennial) slipped one in on the empty net and ended the game.

Brandon Stephenson (Jr.-Saline, Mich./Saline) got the win for the Blugolds.  He had 15 saves on the night.  The Blugolds outshot the Falcons 34-16.

The Blugolds travel to St. Norbert next Saturday night to take on the Green Knights in the Semifinals.  This is only the fourth time in school history that the Blugolds have made it to the NCHA semifinals with the last time being in 2008.
