EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team did not have the magic touch it needed tonight as it got shutout by its I94 rival UW-Stout 0-2.
The I94 matchup started out with an uneventful first period for both teams. Neither team was able to get a puck on goal. The Blugolds led in shots with only nine on goal and the Blue Devils followed with seven.
Second period showed more of an offensive push. The Blugolds started the period out with five consecutive minutes of power play, but were not able to capitalize off it. There was a total of 38 shots taken by both teams. Tom Lecovich was a brick wall for the Blue Devils getting 21 saves against the Blugolds. Many of his saves were impressive stops that should have been big game changing goals.
Kevin O'Donnell broke the scoring silence at 13:56 of the second period when he scored the first goal of the night putting the Blue Devils up 1-0.
The Blue Devils solidified their win in the third period when they found the back of the net for a second time at 13:06. The Blugolds would get a five minute power play opportunity but again could not make anything happen from it.
On the night the Blugolds outshot the Blue Devils 49-32.
Andrew Martin (Fr.-Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) got the loss for the Blugolds. In 18:39 minutes of play he had 30 saves. For the Blue Devils, Lascovich got 49 saves.
The Blugolds finish out the regular season next weekend as they host UW-Superior Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Hobbs Ice Center.
