SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team played UW-Superior to a 2-2 stalemate today, completing the weekend series with the Yellowjackets without a loss and pushing its unbeaten streak to five games.
The Blugolds, whose last loss was on Dec. 10, are now 11-6-2 overall and 5-6-1 in NCHA play, tied for fourth place in the league with UW-Stevens Point. Superior is now 8-8-3 on the season and 3-6-3 in the NCHA.
Eau Claire and Superior scored goals in both the second and third periods at nearly identical times.
The Blugolds started the scoring at 8:26 in the second period but Superior quickly answered at 10:04. In the third period, Eau Claire scored at 8:04 and Superior again answered at 10:03 to tie the game at two.
In the overtime, each team finished with just one shot as the final score read 2-2.
Brian Nehring (So.-Hopedale, Mass./Milford) scored the Blugolds' first goal while Isaiah Bennis (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) found the back of the net in the third. Robbie Anderegg (So.-Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) and PJ Kavaya (Sr.-San Clemente, Calif.) earned assists on the second-period goal while Nehring was credited with the assist on the Blugolds' final goal.
The Blugolds edged the Yellowjackets on the shot chart, 19-15. Brandon Stephenson (Jr.-Saline, Mich.) was in-goal all 65 minutes and stopped 13 shots. He is now 8-5-2 on the season.
Next weekend, the Blugolds will both be at home and on the road. Friday they will face UW-Stevens Point at Hobbs at 7 p.m. before heading to De Pere to take on St. Norbert College on Saturday.
