Men's Hockey Falls at UW-Stevens Point to Split Series

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – After winning 4-1 last night, the UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team gave up a goal with less than three minutes to play and ended up falling 2-1 to UW-Stevens Point at K.B. Willett Arena tonight.

The Blugolds jumped out to the initial lead as Brian Nehring (So.-Hopedale, Mass./Milford) scored at 14:58 in the first period to give the Blugolds a 1-0 lead. Travis Peckskamp (Jr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn.) and David Donnellan (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) assisted on the goal.

In the second period, Kyle Heck tied the game up for the Pointers at 7:29 while he added the eventual game-winner at 17:16 in the third period.

Following the Pointers' final goal, the Blugolds were on a power-play but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Eau Claire finished outshooting the Pointers 23-19. In the first period, the Blugolds led 10-3 but Stevens Point outshot the Blugolds 7-4 in the third period.

Brandon Stephenson (Jr.-Saline, Mich.) was in-goal for almost 59 minutes and stopped 17 shots. The Blugolds played the final 1:04 with an empty net.

Eau Claire ends a three-game winning streak while the Pointers end a six-game non-winning streak. The Blugolds are now 7-5 overall and 3-5 in the conference. The Pointers are now 3-6-2 on the season and 2-4-2 in NCHA play.

Next up, the Blugolds will host UW-River Falls next Friday and Saturday. Friday will be youth night and both games will get underway at 7 p.m.
