MENOMONIE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team came up big tonight picking up its first win of the season and handing UW-Stout its first loss, in a 3-2 win.
The Blugolds came out strong in the first period with a goal by Travis Peckskamp (Jr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids) in the eighth minute on an assist by Andrew McCabe (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Bryce Wilcox (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./Century). Tyler Jundt (Sr.-Williston, ND/Williston) was able to follow that up minutes later with a power play goal to bring the Blugolds to an early 2-0 lead.
In the second period, the Blugolds continued to dominate, outshooting the Blue Devils 14-4. However, UW-Stout was able to find the back of the net on a power play when Wilcox was called for interfering.
The Blue Devils found the net one more time in the third to tie the game at 2-2, but not for long as Jordan Singer (Lino Lake, Minn./Centennial) got his first goal of the season at the 14:42 mark pulling the Blugolds ahead 3-2. Eau Claire was able to hold onto its lead and finish the game with a 3-2 win.
The Blugolds outshot the Blue Devils all night long 35-23. Goaltender Andrew Martin (Fr.-Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) was able to pick up his first collegiate win along with 21 saves.
The Blugolds open up at home next Friday in a non-conference game against Bethel University. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Hobbs Ice Center.
