ADRIAN, Mich. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team started out strong on the first day of the Adrian Thanksgiving Tournament as it defeated host No. 4 Adrian College 2-1.
Adrian got the game going in the first period when it scored the first goal of the day, a power play goal, at 7:22 after Bryce Wilcox (Jr.-Rochester Minn./Century) was called for high sticking.
Adrian maintained its lead all the way up until 15:55 when Jon Waggoner (So.-Fairbanks, Alaska/Lathrop) found the back of the net on a pass from Jared Williams (So.-West Chicago, Ill./Bartlett) and Devin Mantha (Jr.-Sturgeon Falls, Ont./Ann Arbor Pioneer). The tying goal came on the power play after three Bulldogs were called for penalties in a four minute time span.
A little over two minutes into the second period, Blugold defenseman Tyler Romasco (Sr.-Perry, Ohio/Perry) got his first goal of the season to pull the Blugolds ahead 2-1. At the same time of the goal, Adrian player Grant Telfer was given a five minute major for boarding and then was given a 10 minute disqualification.
The Blugolds were able to hold onto that one goal lead all the way to the end of the game to beat the No. 4 Bulldogs 2-1 and improve their record to 5-4-0.
On the day, the Blugolds outshot the Bulldogs 27-18. Goalie Brandon Stephenson (Jr.-Saline, Mich./Saline) collected 17 saves and improves to 3-3-0.
The Blugolds return to action tomorrow to play in the championship game at the Adrian Thanksgiving Tournament. The puck will drop at 12:00 p.m. CST. They will face Buffalo State who defeated No. 13 St. Thomas.
