Volleyball Sweeps Yellowjackets for Fourth Straight Win

SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team won its fourth match in a row, defeating UW-Superior 3-0 at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium tonight.

Eau Claire improves to 17-9 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Superior is 16-10 on the season and 0-5 in WIAC play. The Blugolds have won 34 straight matches over Superior going back to 1995. Winning eight matches in a row 3-0, the Blugolds have lost just three sets to the Yellowjackets in the past 33 matches.

Early in the first set, Superior jumped out to a lead and took a 10-7 advantage before the Blugolds were able to come back. The Blugolds and Yellowjackets were tied at 10 at one point and at 13 a few moments later before Eau Claire scored five straight to take an 18-13 lead. From there, the Blugolds outscored Superior 7-6 to win the set 25-19.

In the second set, the Yellowjackets took the early lead before the Blugolds got things going. After a 10-10 tie, Eau Claire scored the next point and never trailed again, eventually finding its way to a 25-20 win.

In the final set, after the teams were tied at three, the Blugolds went on a 6-0 run to get up 9-3. But the Yellowjackets chipped away at the Blugolds' lead and got to within one point (19-18). From there, the Blugolds outscored Superior 6-1 to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

As a team, the Blugolds hit .339 to .189 for Superior. Kelly Schuh (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./Hortonville) led the match with 15 kills while Amy Bomgren (Sr.-Woodbury, Minn.) had 14 and Anne Satterlee (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) tallied 13.

Lauren Sutherland (Jr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) finished with a match-high 11 digs while Emily Neave (Sr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) had 10 digs and a match-high 35 set assists.

Eau Claire will be off this weekend and will next compete Wednesday (Oct. 17) at UW-River Falls. Action will get underway at 7 p.m.
