Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Cornell Classic

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team ended the two-day Cornell College Classic with a win and a loss, opening with a 3-1 loss against Bethel University (Minn.) before defeating St. Olaf College (Minn.) 3-2.

Against Bethel, the Blugolds got down early, falling 25-22 in each of the first two sets. Eau Claire fought back in the third set and won 25-13 but Bethel edged Eau Claire in the final set 25-23 to take the match 3-1.

Amy Bomgren (Sr.-Woodbury, Minn.) led the Blugolds in hitting with 17 kills and a .326 hitting percentage. Two other Blugolds also reached double figures in kills.

Lauren Sutherland (Jr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) finished with 27 digs to lead the match and Emily Neave (Sr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) had a match-best 49 set assists.

In the second match, the Blugolds again found themselves down early but were able to win the final three sets and take home the overall win.

St. Olaf won the first set 27-25 and the second 25-19 but the Blugolds followed with 25-15, 25-21 and 15-13 set victories to secure the match win.

Four Blugolds finished in double digits in kills with Anne Satterlee (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) leading the way with 19. Sutherland again led Eau Claire with 20 digs while Neave finished with a match-high 60 set assists.

Bomgren and Satterlee were both named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the event.

Eau Claire is now 8-5 on the season.

Wednesday the Blugolds will be home to open their conference schedule against UW-Stout. It will be UWEC Student/Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night and the action will get started at 7 p.m.
