EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - A total of 11 UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been recognized by being named an Athlete of the Week for the second week of the 2014-15 season.
Football
Offense: Korey Jacobson, Wide Receiver, 5-9, 180, Sophomore, Baldwin, Wis./St. Croix Central
Jacobson set a school record for most receptions in a game as he caught 17 passes for 107 yards in his debut with the Blugolds against 11th-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Saturday. The previous school record was 13, set by Chris Herzog on Sept. 23, 1989 against UW-River Falls.
Defense: Mack Sims, Cornerback, 6-3, 194, Senior, Madison, Wis./Memorial
Facing 11th-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in the Blugolds’ opener on Saturday, Sims finished with six tackles (one solo, five assists), one of which was a half tackle for loss, while he broke up one pass.
Special Teams: Zach Culbertson, Tight End, 6-5, 207, Sophomore, Eau Claire, Wis./Chi-Hi
Culbertson was the Blugolds’ long snapper for the season-opener against 11th-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Saturday. He completed all of his snaps well and also had a tackle on a Blugold punt.
Women’s Tennis
Singles: Paige Kuepers, Junior, Green Bay, Wis./Southwest
Competing at No. 4 singles, Kuepers was undefeated this weekend in two matches in Green Bay. Friday, she won 6-0, 6-2 against Elmhurst College (Ill.), a team the Blugolds beat 8-1. Against St. Norbert College on Saturday, she won 7-5, 6-3 as the Blugolds won 7-2.
Doubles: Maddie Johnson, Senior, Lakeville, Minn./South & Madison Rossebo, Senior, Minnetonka, Minn.
Johnson and Rossebo were undefeated this weekend, facing two opponents in Green Bay. Against Elmhurst College (Ill.) on Friday, a match the Blugolds won 8-1, the No. 1 doubles pair won 8-5 and followed that with an 8-4 victory Saturday as the Blugolds beat St. Norbert College 7-2.
Soccer
Offense: Sami Matuszak, Forward, 5-4, Freshman, Green Bay, Wis./Preble
Starting two games this week, Matuszak scored two goals as the Blugolds tied and fell against Minnesota opponents. Against Bethel University (Minn.) on Wednesday, Matuszak scored the Blugolds’ first goal at 6:22 in the first period and later, with the Blugolds down 3-1, she scored again at 59:27. The Blugolds were then able to with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Saturday against the College of Saint Benedict (Minn.), Matuszak finished with one shot for a total of three during the week.
Volleyball
Offense: Katrina Raskie, Outside Hitter, 5-9, Sophomore, Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest
Playing in 13 sets in four matches this weekend at the Augsburg Invitational, Raskie and the Blugolds finished with a 3-1 record, which included a 3-1 win over ninth-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.). Raskie led the Blugolds in both kills and service aces while she was second on the team in digs. With Raskie leading the team in kills in three out of four matches, she finished with a total of 43 kills (3.31 per set), 15 of which came against the Tommies. She also had seven service aces and 49 digs along with one block assist. For the second weekend in a row, Raskie was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the invite.
Defense: Jamie Dimka, Defensive Specialist/Libero, 5-7, Junior, Wausau, Wis./East
Playing in 13 sets in four matches this weekend at the Augsburg Invitational, Dimka and the Blugolds finished with a 3-1 record, which included a 3-1 win over ninth-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.). For the weekend, Dimka led the team in digs with 62 (4.77 per set) after coming away with team-highs in three out of the four matches. Against the Tommies, she recorded 20 digs, her highest mark for the weekend. She also had five service aces, 10 set assists and two kills.
Women’s Golf
Kate Engler, Senior, Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner
For the second straight week, Engler led the Blugolds after she tied for fifth place with 152 strokes at the Wartburg College Fall Invitational. As a team, the Blugolds finished in fifth place.
Men’s Golf
Joey Dreier, Sophomore, New London, Minn.
Dreier helped the men’s golf team to tie for fifth place at the season-opening Augsburg Invitational at Majestic Oaks Golf Club this weekend. He tied for seventh place with 147 strokes.
