2014-15 UWEC Athletes of the Week - Week 29 (March 30-April 4)

Softball

Pitcher:  Lauren Blasczyk, Pitcher, Sophomore, Appleton, WI/East
Blasczyk earned a conference win for the Blugolds going 1-1 on the week.  In a 13-2 victory at UW-Stevens Point Blasczyk pitched five innings allowing one unearned run.  Blasczyk allowed three hits, all singles, and struck out three batters while allowing no walks.  In a 10-7 home loss to Marian (Wis.) Blasczyk allowed five runs, three earned, in four innings striking out six Sabre batters while allowing just one walk.  For the week Blasczyk pitched nine innings allowing seven hits, three earned runs, nine strikeouts and one walk posting in ERA of 3.00.

Position:  Casey Arnold, Catcher, Senior, Kaukauna, WI
Arnold had a big week at the plate as the Blugolds went 3-1 for the week.  In an 8-1 home victory over Marian (Wis.) Arnold went two-for-three from the plate including a two-run line drive to center field.  In a 14-5 victory at UW-Stevens Point Arnold again went two-for-three from the plate knocking in three runs, being walked twice and scoring a run.  In game two of the doubleheader, a 13-2 Blugold victory, Arnold went three-for-four from the plate which included a double while racking up three more RBI’s against the Pointers.  For the week Arnold went seven-for-10 (.700) from the plate with seven runs batted in, three walks, two runs scored and one double.  Arnold posted a slugging percentage of .800 and an on-base percentage of .769.

Men’s Tennis

Kyle Hoffman, Junior, Franklin, WI
Hoffman won both singles and doubles matches in as the Blugolds defeated Edgwood College 9-0 and Wartburg College (Ia.) 8-1 this past weekend.  Against the Eagles Hoffman defeated Austin Papenthein at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-4 and teamed up with Andrew Dahl to defeat Papenthein and Patrick Lagman at No. 1 doubles 8-2.  The following day against the Knights Hoffman defeated Eric Hilpert 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while teaming up again with Dahl to defeat Hilpert and Luke Benna at No. 1 doubles 8-0.


Women’s Tennis

Colleen McCullough, Junior, Maple Grove, MN
McCullough played strong at No. 2 singles and doubles as the Blugolds defeated Wartburg College of Iowa 9-0 this past weekend in a dual meet.  In singles play McCullough defeated Kayla Kuethe in a three-set thriller 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 while joining teammate Sarah Henderson to defeat the duo of Melissa Davis and Marissa Buresh 8-1.


Men’s Track and Field

Field:  Roger Steen, Throws, Senior, Luck, WI
Steen won the shot put while placing fourth in the hammer throw and seventh on the discus at the Ashton May Invitational hosted by UW-La Crosse.  Steen won the shot put with a throw of 56-3.25 (17.15 meters) to win the event by over three feet.  Steen is currently the top-ranked shot put thrower in all of NCAA Division III.  Steen also finished fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 170-8 (52.03 meters) and seventh in the discus with a throw of 147-11 (45.09 meters). 

Track:  Brandon Zarnoth, Hurdles and Multi, Senior, Appleton, WI/North
Zarnoth won the 110-meter hurdles at the Ashton May Invitational hosted by UW-La Crosse.  Qualifying for the finals with a preliminary time of 14.88 seconds, Zarnoth won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.64.  His time was .13 seconds off the school record set by Jason Wolf on May 19, 1995.  With his effort Zarnoth currently ranks fourth nationally and is the highest-ranked WIAC runner in the 110 hurdles.

Women’s Track and Field

Track:  Lucy Ramquist, Distance, Senior, River Falls, WI
Ramquist finished the Ashton May Invitational hosted by UW-La Crosse with a strong finish in the 1,500-meter run.  Ramquist finished second in the event with a time of 4:40.38.  She was the top NCAA Division III finisher in the event and her time currently ranks her 15th nationally in the event.
