Women's Tennis Extends Win Streak to Seven with Two Home Victories

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team won twice this weekend, beating the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) 8-1 Friday and Bethel University (Minn.) 9-0 Sunday on the Olson Indoor Courts.

The Blugolds won all matches this weekend except the No. 2 singles match Friday.

Colleen McCullough (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) dropped the fewest games over the weekend, just three, playing at No. 6 singles. She won 8-0 Friday and 6-3, 6-0 Sunday. McCullough is now 14-2 on the season and has won six straight, all during the spring season.

Losing just five games was Katie Gillman (Jr.-Red Wing, Minn.) at No. 3. She won 6-2, 6-0 Friday against St. Scholastica and 6-1, 6-2 Sunday facing Bethel.

The closest match Sunday came at No. 4 singles and Maddie Johnson (So.-Lakeville, Minn./South) hung on for the win. She won the first set 6-0 but dropped the second 6-4 before pulling off the match victory with a 10-2 win in the super-tiebreaker. She also won 8-0 on Friday.

Taylor Heltne (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Mary Frassetto (Jr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) also went undefeated on the weekend, at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

In doubles play, the No. 1 pair of Heltne and Gillman won by the largest margin both days, picking up an 8-1 win Friday and an 8-0 victory Sunday.

Eau Claire is now 15-2 on the season and has won seven straight duals going back to October 13.

The Blugolds will be in Madison for two matches next Sunday. They will face Carroll University at noon and follow with a contest at 3 p.m. against Edgewood College.
