Three Blugolds Finish with Consolation Titles at ITA Regional/Fall Invite

ST. PETER, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire women's tennis players won consolation singles titles at the 2012 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships and Midwest Fall Invite, which was contested over the past three days.

At the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, Taylor Heltne (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) won the consolation singles championship. She won four matches to get to the championship match and defeated Amy Sebastian 6-0, 6-2 in the final match to win the title.

In the Fall Invite, Paige Kuepers (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) won the No. 6 singles draw consolation title while Renee Nelson (So.-Madison, Wis./La Follette) won the No. 3 singles draw consolation title. Kuepers won two matches to get to the championship match and then won 8-1 to take the title while Nelson also won twice and then picked up an 8-4 victory in the championship match.

Also doing well in singles competitions were Colleen McCullough (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) and Mary Frassetto (Jr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West), who were both runners-up in their respective draws.

In doubles competition, Heltne and Katie Gillman (Jr.-Red Wing, Minn.) competed in a semifinal match at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. The pair won three matches to get to the semifinals but then fell 8-3 in the semifinal match.

Wednesday, the Blugolds will get back to conference play when they travel to UW-River Falls to face the Falcons. Action will get underway at 3 p.m.
