Women's Tennis Splits Weekend Matches on the Road

LA CROSSE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team picked up a conference win over UW-La Crosse Saturday, dropping only three out of nine matches, after falling 6-3 to Winona State University (Minn.) Friday.

The largest victory coming from Saturday's matches spawned from Taylor Heltne (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) who defeated UW-L's Abby Tresedder 6-2 and 6-2.

Other notable finishes came from the doubles team of Gretchen Bachmeier (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) and Maddie Johnson (So.-Lakeville, Minn./South) narrowly beat La Crosse's Bryanne Blanton and Andrea Vivian 9-8.

All matches Saturday were played indoors at Mitchell Hall due to rain.

Friday, the Blugolds dropped all but three of their matches, picking up wins from singles players Mary Frassetto (Jr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) and Colleen McCullough (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo), as well as the doubles team Heltne and Katie Gillman (Jr.-Red Wing, Minn.).

Frassetto defeated Winona's Laura Lindstrand 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 5, while teammate McCullough took down Laura Roesslein 7-5 and 6-3 in the No. 6 spot.

Doubles players Heltne and Gillman came away with an 8-5 win over Winona's No. 1 doubles team of Erin Kappers and Laura Lindstrand.

The Blugolds are now 9-2 overall and 5-1 in WIAC conference play.

The team will be back in action Oct. 20-21 in Madison, Wis. for the WIAC Championship. Matches begin at 12:40 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.
