Four Blugolds Named WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Four UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) athletes of the week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Selected this week were women's volleyball player Amy Bomgren (Sr.-Woodbury, Minn.), women's golfer Kate Engler (So.-Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner) and women's tennis players Katie Gillman (Jr.-Red Wing, Minn.) and Taylor Heltne (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley).

Bomgren helped lead the Blugolds to a 3-1 record as they opened the season with the UW-Eau Claire Labor Day Classic.  She finished with 58 kills in four matches to lead the team and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the event.  Bomgren also had 40 digs, third most on the team, and seven blocks, fourth most on the team, as she competed in 14 out of 15 sets over the course of the weekend.  In the Blugolds' match against Concordia University-Moorhead (Minn.) on Aug. 31, Bomgren finished with a match-high 24 kills, just five short of a school record.

Engler led the Blugolds at their season-opening Doug Georgianni Memorial Invitational, an event where the Blugolds finished in fourth place out of 20 teams.  She tied for the best score of the two-day tournament, a 155, but medalist honors went to Olivia Lugar of Washington University (Mo.) because of a lower second round score (Engler had 79, Lugar had 78).

At the Warhawk Invitational on Sept. 1, Gillman and Heltne won the No. 1 double draw. They opened the day with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Miranda Pence and Chelsea Lavin of Augustana College (Ill.) and followed with a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-6 win over Megan Kasten and Jackie Vitale of UW-Whitewater.  In the championship match, the pair went on to defeat Olivia Hartwick and Bryanne Blanton of UW-La Crosse 7-5, 6-0.
