Women's Tennis on Spring Break - Blugolds Edge Allegheny on Final Day

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team wrapped up its final day of competition on Spring Break with a 5-4 victory over Allegheny College (Pa.) today.

The Blugolds won two of three doubles competitions and three of six singles matches to remain undefeated (4-0) on their Spring Break trip.

In singles play, Gretchen Bachmeier (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North), Mary Frassetto (Jr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) and Colleen McCullough (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) all won their matches to complete Spring Break with 4-0 records.

Bachmeier won 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot while Frassetto won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5. Competing at No. 6, McCullough edged her opponent 5-7, 6-3, 10-4.

On the doubles side, Bachmeier and Maddie Johnson (So.-Lakeville, Minn./South) picked up an 8-4 No. 2 win and Frassetto and Madison Rossebo (So.-Minnetonka, Minn.) won 8-6 at No. 3.

The Blugolds improve to 13-2 on the season. They will be back in action April 5 when they host the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) at 4 p.m.  in the McPhee Physical Education Center.

Women's Tennis on Spring Break - Blugolds Defeat Nebraska Wesleyan on Third Day

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Blugolds.com) – Playing in its third match of its 2013 Spring Break trip, the UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team defeated Nebraska Wesleyan University 7-2 today.

The Blugolds swept singles competition but won just one out of three in doubles play.

The pair of Taylor Heltne (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Katie Gillman (Jr.-Red Wing, Minn.) had the Blugolds' lone victory at No. 1 doubles, 8-4.

In singles play, the No. 4 and No. 5 matches were the most closely contested but Blugolds came out on top in both.

Gretchen Bachmeier (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) and Colleen McCullough (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) gave up the fewest games in singles competition as they both won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively.

Eau Claire improves to 12-2 on the season and was won four straight contests.

The Blugolds will wrap up their Spring Break trip facing Allegheny (Pa.) tomorrow at 8 a.m. (Eastern).

Women's Tennis on Spring Break - Blugolds Blank Millersville on Second Day

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Blugolds.com) – For the second day in a row, the UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 win on Spring Break. Today's opponent was Millersville University (Pa.).

The Blugolds won every match in straight sets on their way to improving to 11-2 on the season.

Gretchen Bachmeier (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) and Colleen McCullough (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) dropped the fewest games as they both won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

In doubles play, the team of Bachmeier and Maddie Johnson (So.-Lakeville, Minn./South) finished with the best score of the day, winning 8-2 at No. 2.

The Blugolds have now won three straight contests going back to last fall.

They will be off tomorrow but will get back on the court Wednesday at 8 a.m. (Eastern) to take on Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Women's Tennis on Spring Break - Blugolds Sweep Kutztown on Day One

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Blugolds.com) – Opening its 2013 Spring Break trip, the UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team defeated Kutztown University (Pa.) 9-0 today.

Outside of the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, the Blugolds won all four of the other singles flights in straight sets.

Taylor Heltne (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Gretchen Bachmeier (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) both got down early, in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots, losing the first set but recovered and went on to secure the win.

Losing the fewest games was Colleen McCullough (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) in the No. 6 spot as she won 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles competition, all three Blugold teams won with scores of 8-3.

This was the first event of the spring portion for the Blugolds' schedule as they improve to 10-2 on the season.

The Blugolds will stay in Hilton Head and play matches until this Thursday.  Tomorrow, they will look to continue their hot streak against Millersville University (Pa.).
