Women's Tennis Opens Home Play with Two Wins

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team opened home competition with two victories on the Ade Olson Outdoor Tennis Courts today.

Eau Claire kicked off the day with an 8-1 win over Wartburg College (Iowa) while defeating St. Norbert College 9-0 later in the day. The Blugolds' only loss came at No. 4 singles against Wartburg.

Gretchen Bachmeier (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) lost the fewest number of games for any Blugold over the weekend, just one, as she won two matches at No. 3 singles. She defeated Wartburg's Katherine Ross 6-0, 6-0 and then followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over St. Norbert's Maria Slusarek.

In doubles play, Taylor Heltne (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Katie Gillman (Jr.-Red Wing, Minn.) had the fewest number of losses as they came up winning both of their No. 1 matches. They won 8-1 to start the day against Wartburg and finished with an 8-2 victory over their St. Norbert opponents.

The Blugolds are now 3-1 on the season.

Next Friday and Saturday, the Blugolds will compete at the ITA Tournament in St. Peter, Minn.
