River Falls, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team played in their final regular season game on Saturday, February 15th. The Blugolds traveled back to UW-River Falls to complete their weekend series against the Falcons.
The first period was an uncommon one for Eau Claire after giving up two goals in front of their own net to trail 2-0. It would be only the fourth time all season the Blugolds trailed after the opening frame.
In the second period of play, the Blugolds would answer at the six-minute mark after Scott Munro (Sr. – Vancouver, BC/St. George's) buried his own rebound to make it 2-1. The Falcons would find the back of the net with just seconds remaining to put Eau Claire deficit back to two goals.
The third period would serve as an uphill battle for the Blugolds. Tyler Tomberlin (Sr. – Andover, MN) would spring some life for Eau Claire with his second goal of the season to make it 4-2. Time would then be the main opponent for the Blugolds as the clock would expire before any they could rally.
Goaltender Zach Dyment (Jr. – Abbotsford, BC/Yale Secondary) stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced in just his third loss of the season and is now 16-3-2.
The Blugolds will take a week off with a bye in the Quarterfinals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's). They will host the semifinal round on February 28th and 29th at Hobbs Ice Center.
