Eau Claire, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team concluded their nonconference weekend series this Saturday, as they traveled to Northern Minnesota to play the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers. After a commanding win the night before, the Blugolds were edged out in the last minute to a 3-2 loss.
The first period would go in favor of Eau Claire after Jake Bresser (Sr. – Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) would sneak one in the bottom corner for the game's first tally. This would be Bresser's third goal of the weekend and tenth of the season.
Everything seemed to be going the Blugolds' way entering the second period as Derek Hammer (So. – Woodbury, MN/East Ridge) would send a pass to Adam Parsells (Jr. – Wausau, WI/West) at the point. Parsells would then rifle one from the blue line and beat the Cobber goaltender off the post to increase the lead to 2-0.
From there the Blugolds could not catch a break and would be tied at two going into the third period.
With the two Cobber goals coming on the powerplay, the Blugolds would get some relief after killing off a five-minute major halfway through the third, but luck still was not on their side. The Cobbers would tip in a shot with just 51 seconds remaining in the game to hand the Blugolds their fourth loss of the season.
Goaltender Riley McVeigh (So. – Calgary, AB/Rundle College) stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced in his first loss of the season. He is now 3-1-1 on the year.
The Blugolds will return home this week for a full slate of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games, starting with UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday, January 22nd. Puck drop is scheduled for 7PM.
