Volleyball Wins Fourth in a Row

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team picked up its fourth straight win with a 3-1 victory over UW-River Falls at the McPhee Physical Education Center tonight.

Competing in front of a large crowd for Brest Cancer Awareness Night, the Blugolds opened with a 25-18 win in set one but River Falls came back to even the match with a 25-21 win in the second set.

After being down 8-5 in the third set, the Blugolds scored seven straight points to take a 12-8 lead and while the Falcons and Blugolds went back and forth for a little while, Eau Claire scored six unanswered in the end to win 25-14.

In the final set, the Blugolds jumped out to a 13-8 advantage and led by as much as six (16-10) but River Falls battled back to keep in close. Near the end, the Blugolds were up by just two (22-20) but were able to secure a 25-22 victory to win the match.

For the Blugolds, Liz Amici (Sr.-Whitewater, Wis.) led with a match and career-high 18 kills and also had seven block assists while Laura Slinger (Sr.-Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) had 16 kills. Amici hit .485 and Slinger hit .448.

Lauren Sutherland (So.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) finished with a match-high 24 digs and Emily Neave (Jr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) totaled 43 set assists, also a match-high.

For River Falls, Danielle Gibbemeyer finished with 11 kills while Erin Green had 10. Courtney Preiner led the team with 20 digs.

The Blugolds, who have won three consecutive conference matches, improve to 5-1 in the WIAC and 13-11 overall. The Falcons drop to 2-4 in conference play and 13-14 overall.

Up next, the Blugolds will compete in four matches at the Slagell Classic, hosted by Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. The first match is set for Friday at 5 p.m. against Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.).
