Volleyball Concludes Wartburg Tournament with Win

WAVERLY, Iowa (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Wartburg College (Iowa) early in the day to claim a 3-1 victory over St. Olaf College (Minn.) in the final match of the Wartburg Tournament.

The Blugolds dropped the opening set against Wartburg with a stinging 25-14 loss. Eau Claire gave more of a challenge in the next sets (26-24, 25-21) but still fell 3-0.

St. Olaf took the first set 25-21 in the Blugolds' second match of the day, but the Blugolds took control. Eau Claire won the following sets 25-10, 27-25 and 25-16 for the 3-1 match victory.

Lauren Sutherland (So.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) led the Blugolds in digs, racking up 13 in each match. Liz Amici (Sr.-Whitewater, Wis.) and Kelly Schuh (So.-Appleton, Wis./Hortonville) also had strong efforts statistically. Amici nailed 13 kills against Wartburg. Schuh tallied double digits in both digs and kills against St. Olaf, with 10 apiece. Emily Neave (Jr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) totaled 73 set assists during the two matches.

Laura Slinger (Sr.-Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) was named to the All-Tournament. She led the Blugolds this weekend with 47 total kills in four matches.

The Blugolds remain one game shy of .500 with a seasonal record of 10-11. Eau Claire will take on UW-Oshkosh next Saturday, Oct. 8 for a conference match. Competition is set to begin at 2 p.m. in Oshkosh.
