Women's Golf Rallies to Win Wartburg Invite

WAVERLY, Iowa (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire women's golf team made a dramatic comeback on the second day of competition to win first place of 10 teams competing in today's Wartburg Invitational.

After yesterday's first round, the Blugolds were four strokes out of first place with 333. In today's second round, Eau Claire sliced off 13 strokes to claim the victory with a final total of 653. Yesterday's leader St. Olaf College (Minn.) concluded the event with 659 and host Wartburg College (Iowa) nabbed third with 665.

Two St. Olaf golfers – Molly Erickson and Molly Knutson – claimed first and second in the individual competition, but Blugold golfers stacked the top 15. Catherine Wagner (So.-Austin, Minn.) bested her first round total by two strokes to finish with a total of 155 in third. Emily Swift (Jr.-Onalaska, Wis.) followed by just one stroke for fourth place.

Shooting a 164, Sara Mattes (Jr.-La Crosse, Wis./Central) tied for sixth place while Lauren Gault (Jr.-Shorewood, Wis.) claimed 12th with 169 strokes. Katie Maurer (Jr.-Forest Lake, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) rounded out Eau Claire's top five with a final total of 173 to tie for 15th place.

Next weekend, the Blugolds will participate in the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling in Normal, Ill. The two-day event will begin Saturday at Ironwood Golf Course.
