EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team advances to the second round of the WIAC Soccer Championship defeating UW-Stout 1-0 here today at Bollinger Field.
The third-seeded Blugolds improve to 8-9-2 overall while the sixth-seeded Blue Devils end their season at 5-10-3. It was the second time in seven days that the Blugolds beat the Blue Devils by identical 1-0 scores. The Blugolds are 3-4-0 in games in which the score is 1-0 and 5-5-0 in one-goal games.
Forward Sami Matuszak (Fr.-Green Bay, WI/Preble) knocked in the game-winning goal off a corner kick at 27:29 assisted by forward Leah Perras (Fr.-Neenah, WI). The ball bounced around in front of the net before Matuszak was able to put it into the net. It was Matuszak's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Eau Claire outshot Stout 16-7 and held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks. Both teams were each whistled for four fouls.
Goalie Emily Byal (So.-Eagle, WI/Palmyra-Eagle) won her second consecutive game recording one save. Byal is 3-1-0 overall with two shutout victories.
The Blugolds will travel to Oshkosh on Thursday, November 6 when they will face the second-seeded UW-Oshkosh Titans. The game is schedule for a 6 p.m. start.
