MENOMONIE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire soccer team got past UW-Stout with a 3-2 victory at Nelson Field tonight.
While the Blugolds found themselves ahead at halftime after Gina Williams (Jr.-Madison, Wis./Verona Area) scored early in the opening half, the scoring would pick up in the second half.
Just over a minute into the second half, Stout's Taylor Kizlik found the back of the Blugolds' net to tie the score at 1-1.
But the Blugolds got two goals from Katie Richter (Jr.-Waukesha, Wis./West) over the next 30 minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Her first goal was a long, looping ball from about 30 yards out and went off the outstretched fingertips of the Stout goalkeeper. Richter then connected on what would prove to be the game-winning goal when she booted in a rebound.
Stout's Grace Salwasser scored at 76:31 to get the Blue Devils within one, but the teams played even the rest of the way.
The Blugolds led the shot chart 10-8, placing eight shots on-goal to Stout's five. Nina Behrenbrinker (So.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) played all 90 minutes in-goal for Eau Claire and stopped three shots.
Eau Claire is now 10-5-3 on the season and 4-2-1 in WIAC play. Stout falls to 11-3-1 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
The Blugolds will wrap up the regular season Saturday when they travel to UW-Whitewater to face the Warhawks. Action is set to get underway at 5 p.m.
