Three Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire Blugolds have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Receiving honors this week were football quarterback Austin Neu (Jr.-Iron Ridge, Wis./Hustisford), women’s soccer defender Emily Moore (Jr.-Brookfield, WI/Central) and women’s cross country runner Alyssa Sybilrud (Sr.-Savage, MN/Burnsville).

Neu had a career day as the Blugolds defeated UW-Stout 24-10.  He completed 19-of-24 passes for a career-high 349 yards.  His previous career best was 344 yards which he reached against the Blue Devils a year ago.  In this year’s contest, Neu had two touchdown passes, one for 23 yards and another for 29 yards.

Moore was part of a defense that was credited with allowing 10 shots, only four on-goal, in two games during the week.  Against Macalester College (Minn.) on Oct. 2, the Blugolds won 3-0 and didn’t allow a single shot on goal, the first time the Scots haven’t had one since Sept. 5, 2006.  Moore and the Blugolds allowed four shots on goal against UW-Platteville in a 2-1 double overtime victory on Oct. 1.

Sybilrud led the Blugolds to a third-place finish out of 19 teams at the Blugold Invitational on Sept. 30 at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis.  She finished 10th out of 341 runners with a time of 22:32.6 on the 6K course and was the top finisher amongst WIAC competitors.
