EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Five UW-Eau Claire Athletics teams were in action today, men's hockey opening the season at home while the rest were on the road.

Women's Cross Country

Luther JV Cup - 1st of 3

The women's cross country team put all five of its scoring runners in the top 10 of the race to take home first-place honors at the JV Cup, hosted by Luther College. The Blugolds scored 24 points to narrowly better themselves from the host Norse's 31. Monica Emerson won the meet, covering the 6,000-meter course in 23:47.4.

Men's Cross Country

Luther JV Cup - 3rd of 5

Despite putting four runners in the top ten of the race, the men's cross country team fell four points short of first and three points shy of second-place to take home third place honors at the JV Cup, hosted by Luther College. Augustana (Ill.) won the meet with 40 points, Luther finished second with 41 and the Blugolds clocked in with 44 points. Steven Schimmel won the meet individually, covering the 8,000-meter course in 26:35.1.

Women's Volleyball

UW-Whitewater 3, UW-Eau Claire 1 (25-23, 17-25, 29-27, 25-14)

While the volleyball team defeated UW-Whitewater 3-1 two weeks ago, the Blugolds were unable to repeat as the Warhawks won 3-1 tonight in the semifinals of the WIAC Championship at Berg Gymnasium at UW-Stevens Point. Kelly Schuh led the match with 16 kills.

Men's Hockey

UW-Eau Claire 5, St. Olaf (Minn.) 2

The men's hockey team kicked off the 2013-2014 season by recognizing the National Championship season from just a year ago. After a bit of a slow start, they began the season the same way they ended last season, with a win, this time it was a 5-2 victory over St. Olaf (Minn.) in front of 1,600 people at Hobbs Ice Center. Five different Blugolds scored goals tonight.

Women's Hockey

UW-Eau Claire 3, St. Catherine (Minn.) 0

The women's hockey team secured its first win of the season, defeating St. Catherine University (Minn.) 3-0 at Drake Arena tonight. Three different Blugolds scored and Hadley Cookson, who scored the Blugolds' second goal, led the game with six shots. Eau Claire outshot the Wildcats 31-17.
