Game Day Review - Saturday, September 7, 2013

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Seven UW-Eau Claire Athletics teams were in action today, two at home and five on the road, with three of the teams opening their 2013 season.

Women's Tennis

UW-Eau Claire 8, Wartburg (Iowa) 1
UW-Eau Claire 9, Lawrence 0

The Blugolds faced two teams today in Waverly, Iowa and won both, improving to 3-0 on the season. Against Wartburg, the Blugolds had a number of close matches on the singles side and won all but one. Facing Lawrence, all six singles players won in straight sets, giving up just a combined six games. Next weekend the Blugolds will be at home both Friday and Saturday to face three different opponents.

Cross Country

The men's and women's cross country teams opened the season today by hosting their annual Alumni/Open meet at Lowes Creek County Park in Eau Claire. Alumni won both races. Ryan Mugan led the Blugold men's team by taking second place while Alana Jenkins led the women's team by coming in fourth place.

Volleyball

UW-Eau Claire 3, Northwestern (Minn.) 0
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) 3, UW-Eau Claire 1

The women's volleyball team opened the day with a win but fell later in the day to finish the two-day Augsburg College Invitational with a 2-2 record at Si Melby Hall. The Blugolds started the day with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21) win over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) but fell 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19) to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) to finish the day. Kelly Schuh, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the team in both matches, combining for 26 kills, while Lauren Sutherland led the Blugolds during both matches in digs.

Football

St. Thomas (Minn.) 52, UW-Eau Claire 7

The UW-Eau Claire football team had a tough time today at second-ranked and 2012 NCAA Division III runner-up University of St. Thomas (Minn.), falling 52-7 to the Tommies at O'Shaughnessy Stadium. St. Thomas scored on all five of its first-half possessions and the Blugolds scored their touchdown on the first play of the second quarter with Joel Sweeney finishing off a 67-yard drive with a one yard run into the end zone.

Women's Golf

The Blugolds competed at the Wartburg College Invitational today at Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa. Kate Engler is currently tied for first place with 74 strokes while the Blugolds are in sixth place out of 15 teams. Sunday the Blugolds will compete in the second and final round.

Soccer

UW-Eau Claire 1, Augsburg (Minn.) 1 (2 OT)

While it looked like the UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team would be handed its first loss of the season at Augsburg College (Minn.) tonight, a goal with two seconds remaining helped keep the Blugolds' unbeaten record intact as the teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie. With two seconds remaining in regulation, a Blugold pass in front of the goal was redirected by an Augsburg player and into the net to put the Blugolds on the scoreboard.
