Women's Hockey Upsets Nationally-Ranked Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team upset ninth-ranked UW-Superior with a 3-2 victory over the Yellowjackets at Wessman Arena tonight.

The Blugolds, who haven't lost a game since Jan. 20, defeated Superior for just the fifth time in school history. The last time Eau Claire beat Superior was Jan. 9, 2009 while the other wins came in 2007, 2005 and 2003.

Toni Simones (Sr.-Rosemount, Minn./South St. Paul) and Dani Kerr (Jr.-Little Canada, Minn./Roseville) combined for all three Blugold goals this evening.

In the opening period at 10:37, Simones got things going with a power-play goal on an assist from Kerr.

While the Blugolds were up 1-0 heading into the second period, two quick goals gave the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead. One goal came 54 seconds into the period while the second came just over a minute later.

But the Blugolds tied the score at 11:36 in the second period as Kerr found the back of the net with an assist from Simones.

In the final period, Simones scored the eventual game-winner, with Kerr again assisting, at 6:27 and the Blugolds held on for the 3-2 win.

Eau Claire edged Superior on the shot chart, 25-23, while Morgan Pieper (Sr.-Williams, Minn./Warroad) collected 21 saves and the win for the Blugolds in the net. She is now 6-7-2 on the season.

The Blugolds improve to 7-11-4 overall and 6-8-3 in NCHA play. Since Jan. 7, the Blugolds hold a record of 5-2-2. Superior, which is in second place in the conference, falls to 13-6-3 on the season and 11-4-2 in the conference.

Tomorrow the teams will meet again in Superior. The puck is set to drop at 2 p.m.
