Women's Hockey Shutout by St. Thomas

Women's Hockey Shutout by St. Thomas

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team had a rough night as it got shutout at home against nonconference opponent St. Thomas 4-0.

The Tommies got their offensive drive going in the first period when Jamie Tiede snuck one past the goalie and got the first goal of the night at 8:51.  Korinne O'Connor less than two minutes later got the second goal of the night at 10:06 to put the Tommies up 2-0 at the end of the first period.

The second period was a close match up with neither team scoring.  The Tommies got one more shot on than the Blugolds and outshot them 8-7.  Neither team would take advantage of the powerplay opportunities, as Eau Claire was 0-1 and St. Thomas was 0-3.

Eau Claire started the third period a player short because of a last minute penalty in the second period and St. Thomas would come out ready to take advantage of that as forward O'Connor got her second goal of the night 21 second in.  The Tommies got their fourth and final goal of the night at 8:46 when Aislinn Leonard would fire one in from about 20 feet out from the net.

Tommie goalie Alise Riedel got 21 saves on the night.  Morgan Pieper (Sr.-Williams, Minn./Warroad) would be close behind with 19 saves.

The Blugolds get back to NCHA conference action this weekend as they host Marian University Friday night and Saturday afternoon.  Friday's matchup gets started at 7 p.m. at the Hobbs Ice Center.
