Women's Hockey Battles Back Against Bethel

BLAINE, Minn. (Blugolds.com) –  The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team  was able to come back from last night's loss to tie 2-2 with the Royals in overtime this afternoon at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn.

In the first period, the Blugolds came out strong out shooting the Royals 15-8.  The Royals fought back and in the second period came up with the first goal of the game pulling ahead of the Blugolds 1-0.

Then in the third period Allison Malecek (Jr.-Maple Plain, Minn./Delano) scored on a pass from Emily Haluska (Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) in the eight minute to tie the game up 1-1.  Two minutes later, Casey McMullen (Jr.-Minneapolis, Minn./South) came up big with an unassisted power play goal to pull the Blugolds ahead 2-1.

The Blugolds were able to hold onto their lead all the way up till the last minute when a Royal player scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2.  With the tie, the game went into a five minute overtime where UW-Eau Claire goaltender Morgan Pieper (Sr.-Williams, Minn./Warroad) stayed strong between the pipes saving seven shots made on her and not allowing a goal.

Pieper saw all 65 minutes of play in goal today. She had a total of 37 saves and gave up two goals.

The Blugolds, now 0-1-1 on the season, return home next weekend to open up NCHA conference play against St. Scholastica.  Eau Claire leads the series 1-0-1 after defeating and tying with the Saints last year.  Action will start at 2 p.m. at the Hobbs Ice Center.
