Blugolds Take First Loss of The New Year

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team outshot the St. Mary's Cardinals 29-21, but it was not enough to pull off a win, as they lost 2-1 at the Hobbs Ice Center.

The first period was quiet for both teams as they tried to work out the rust from Holiday break.  Both teams combined for a total of 13 shots in the first period.

Action would pick up in the second period when Eau Claire native Erin Stenseth scored the first goal of the night, an unassisted goal at 6:20 for the Cardinals.  The Blugolds got that goal back when St. Mary's Riley Brown got called for tripping at 13:36.  Sam Knutson (Fr.-North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul) got the puck past the goalie and score on the power play at 14:49.  The period ended tied at 1-1.

A little over two minutes into the third period, St. Mary's broke the tie and scored a goal to pull ahead 2-1.  The Blugolds' would outshoot the Cardinals' in the third period 12-4 but the puck could not find the back of the net.

Mara Stormer (Jr. – Waunakee, Wis.) took the loss for the Blugolds, giving up two goals.  She had 19 saves on the night.

Tomorrow night the Blugolds will head to Winona, Minn. for a rematch against the Cardinals.  The game will get started at 2 p.m.  The Blugolds will return home again this coming Wednesday as they face St. Thomas at 7 p.m.
