Women's Hockey Battles Back and Forth to an Overtime Tie

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team would battle back and forth with UW-Stevens Point to an overtime tie 3-3.

With seconds left on the power play opportunity, Emily Haluska (Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) got things started for the Blugolds in the first period scoring the first goal of the night at 17:04.  Casey McMullen (Jr.-Minneapolis, Minn./South) would get the assist on the goal.

The Pointers got things going in the second period tying the game up at 1-1 at 1:57.  Pointer Ariel Novak would get called for checking again and the Blugolds would take advantage of it scoring a goal and regaining the lead.  Sam Knutson (Fr.-North St. Paul, Minn./North St. Paul) got the goal on a pass from Mackenzie Miller (Fr. -Minnetonka, Minn/Hopkins).  The Blugolds maintained their lead until 12:24 when the Pointers would score a shorthanded goal to tie it up again at 2-2.

The Blugolds pulled ahead one last time in the third period when Nikki Kothenbeutel (So.-Sauk Rapids, Minn/Sauk Rapids-Rice) would score an unassisted goal at 11:57.  Stevens Point rallied back though at 13:01 and tie the game up one last time 3-3. 

The game would go into overtime but neither team was able to capitalize off the extra time.  The Blugolds outshot the Pointers 28-24 and were 2-5 on the power play opportunity.

Morgan Pieper (Sr.-Williams, Minn./Warroad) got the tie for the Blugolds.  She had 21 saves on the day.

The Blugolds will be off for a few weeks and will return to action Jan. 6th to face the Cardinals of St. Marys.  Game action will start at 7 p.m. at the Hobbs Ice Center.
