Flaten Named Assistant Sports Information Director

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Athletic Director Dan Schumacher has announced the hiring of Spencer Flaten as the Athletic Department's Assistant Sports Information Director.

"We are very excited for Spencer to be joining the Blugold family," Schumacher said. "His coverage of UW-Eau Claire Athletics from the outside didn't go unnoticed and it was obvious from the time we met that he would fit in seamlessly and help take UWEC Athletics to the next level."

Flaten joins UW-Eau Claire after nearly five years in the newspaper industry. He began as a sports reporter in 2017 at the Chippewa Herald in Chippewa Falls, Wis., covering high school and other amateur sports in Chippewa County. In 2018, he joined the Leader-Telegram in Eau Claire, where he served as a sports reporter for three years and the sports editor for one. He covered professional, college, high school and other amateur athletics, including sports at UW-Eau Claire and around the WIAC. As editor, he oversaw the sports department, including day-to-day operations and big-picture projects.

"During my time covering UW-Eau Claire athletics as a member of the media, I gained an appreciation for the community on campus and within the Athletic Department," Flaten said. "I look forward to joining that community and showcasing the Blugolds' success on a daily basis. I'm grateful to Athletic Director Dan Schumacher, Associate Athletic Director Robin Baker and the entire search committee for the opportunity to be part of the team, and I can't wait to get going."

The Green Bay, Wis., native graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2017 with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications and Journalism.
