Blugolds fall to Southwestern to wrap up road trip

GEORGETOWN, Tex. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team wrapped up its road trip to Texas with a 15-6 defeat against Southwestern University on Sunday. The Pirates scored five times each in the second and third quarters, and the Blugolds couldn't recover.

Southwestern scored the first three goals of the game across the first 10 minutes of the opening period. The Blugolds got on the scoreboard when Devon Crews (Fr. - St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) scored off a free position shot at the 4:17 mark. Lily Zygowicz (Fr. - Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) cut the deficit to one when she scored off an assist from Reegan Werner (Fr. - Farmington, Minn.) with 1:49 left in the quarter. The Pirates led 3-2 entering the second period.

Southwestern scored one and a half minutes into the second quarter to go ahead 4-2, but UW-Eau Claire responded with a free position shot converted by Alexie Romanelli (So. - Naperville, Ill./Central) at the 10:33 mark. However, the Pirates answered with three straight goals across the following three minutes to go ahead 7-3. The Blugolds got one back on an unassisted goal by Samantha Burns (So. - Mahtomedi, Minn.) with 3:23 remaining, but another Pirate goal just 11 seconds later made it 8-4 in favor of Southwestern at halftime.

Southwestern scored five consecutive goals to open the third quarter and pull away. Romanelli scored on another free position shot with 1:25 remaining in the period to cut the deficit to 13-5.

Riley Domagala (Jr. - Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) scored off an assist from Werner in the fourth quarter, sandwiched by two Pirates goals.

Alexandria Shea (So. - Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) made 13 saves in goal for the Blugolds. Southwestern held a 28-17 advantage in shots on goal. UW-Eau Claire caused 11 turnovers.

The Blugolds will return to the field on Saturday, March 4, with a road game at UW-River Falls. The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
