BROWN DEER, Wisc. (blugolds.com) - The 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships (presented by Culver's) kicked off on Thursday, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's team currently sits in second place after day one of the competition.

Thursday's Results

This three-day event which marks the 46th annual women's championship has the Blugolds in a good spot after the opening two sessions, as they trail the leader UW-La Crosse by just 7.5 points.

Contributing to UW-Eau Claire's 231 team points were first place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle relay, 200 yard individual medley, 50 yard freestyle, and 400 yard medley relay.

The team of Samantha Senczyszyn (So.-Grafton, WI), Brittany Farr (So.-Madison, WI/James Madison Memorial), Sara Hagen (Fr.-Mc Farland, WI), and Jessica Short (So.-Grafton, WI) took first in both the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:35.23) and the 400 yard medley relay (3:48.18). The latter broke the WIAC meet record of 3:48.97 that had stood since 2009. It also marks a new school record and is faster than last year's NCAA invite time.

The pairing from Grafton each took home an individual title as well, with Short's time of 2:05.89 in the 200 yard individual medley and Senczyszyn's 50 yard freestyle posting of 23.43 both good for top honors.

Additionally, Sari Mailey (Jr.-Minnetrista, MN/Mound Westonka) finished runner-up in the 500 yard freestyle with her time of 5:11.75.

Day two of the competition will resume from Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Friday morning with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m.

Follow the action all season long on Blugold Game Day.
