Blugolds, Knights Play to Draw on Senior Day

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team entered Sunday's game with Wartburg College (Iowa) on a three game losing streak in which they did not score a goal.

Fortunately for the Blugolds, they returned home, where they are 6-1-1 this year, to face the Knights, a team receiving votes in the latest NSCAA Top 25 Poll. The Blugolds were able to break the losing streak on Senior Day, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie at Bollinger Field Sunday afternoon.

Just 4:31 into the game, Paige LeGate (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) broke the scoreless streak with an unassisted goal to give the Blugolds the 1-0 lead.

The score stayed that way as UW-Eau Claire was able keep Wartburg College off the board for the first half.

In the second half at 70:25, the Knights tied the game up after controlling most of the play in the second half. The game headed to overtime tied at 1-1, but neither team was able to break through and the game finished in a draw.

While Wartburg outshot the Blugolds 18-10, the margin of shots-on-goal was much more narrow as Eau Claire had eight to 10 for the Knights.

Nina Behrenbrinker
(Jr.-St. Paul, Wis./Cretin-Derham Hall) kept the Blugolds in the game making several key saves throughout. Behrenbrinker finished the game with nine saves.

The Knights held a big advantage with 18 corner kicks to only four for the Blugolds, but Wartburg College was unable to convert on any of the attempts.

The Blugolds are now 8-7-2 this year with only one game remaining in the regular season. They play at UW-La Crosse next Saturday at 4 p.m.
They have also wrapped up a No. 2 seed for the WIAC tournament and will receive a first round bye. The Blugolds will host a WIAC Semifinal game on Nov. 1 with the time and team yet to be determined.
