Ithaca Edges Blugold Soccer 1-0 in Season Opener

GENEVA, N.Y. (Blugolds.com) - It wasn't until the 82nd minute that the 19th-ranked Ithaca College (N.Y.) women's soccer team got on the scoreboard to secure a 1-0 win over UW-Eau Claire in the first game of the 2012 Heron Cup played on Cozzens field this afternoon.

After a back-and-forth first half that ended with a 0-0 tie, both teams came out more aggressive in the second. Just seconds in, Tara Dennehy (Fr.-Eugene, Ore., Churchill) had a scoring chance for the Blugolds, as she had a shot on goal from right out in front, but Bomber goalie Becca Salant came up with the save.

With 24:30 on the clock, Dennehy almost snuck in a shot for UW-Eau Claire. After a Blugold corner, there was a lot of action in front of the goal and Dennehy fired a shot on goal that was stopped by an Ithaca defender.

The Bombers finally broke through late in the second. At 81:35 into the contest, Anna Gray lined up for a free kick after the Blugolds were called for a foul. Gray was about 35 yards out and drilled a shot into the back of the net to secure the victory for Ithaca.

The Bombers held a slight 11-8 led in shots, but the teams tied with seven shots on goal each. The Bombers enjoyed a 10-2 lead in corner kicks. Salant played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with six saves. Nina Behrenbrinker (Jr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) played the entire game in goal for the Blugolds and stopped six shots.

Ithaca will take on Babson tomorrow, Sept. 1 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern, while the Blugolds will face No. 2 William Smith tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern.
