Richter Gives Blugolds 1-0 Victory Over Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — Heading into Saturday's match with UW-Platteville, the UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team had never lost to the Pioneers. The Blugolds also entered the game on a six-game winning streak of their own.

Katie Richter (Sr.-Waukesha, Wis./West) made sure both of those streaks continued as she scored the lone goal in the game and her fourth goal of the year in a 1-0 Blugold victory.

Neither team was able to break through in the first half, but UW-Eau Claire controlled most of the play offensively, outshooting UW-Platteville, 8-2. The trend continued in the second half and finally at 68:31, Richter was able to get the Blugolds on the board.

Nina Behrenbrinker (Jr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) kept the Pioneers of the board the rest of the way, as she picked up her second straight shutout. She made three saves while earning her eighth win of the year.

While the Blugolds improved their record to 26-0-0 against UW-Platteville, one streak did come to an end on Saturday. Gina Williams (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Verona Area) entered the game on an eight game scoring streak, but she saw that come to an end against the Pioneers.

Last season, UW-Platteville came close to ending the streak as the two teams headed to overtime tied at 1-all, but the Blugolds won in double overtime to keep the winning streak alive.

The seven game winning streak the team is currently on is tied for fifth longest in school history. It should be noted that the current streak started at home against Wheaton, Ill., the top ranked team in the nation at the time. The longest streak is 12 and that happened in 1998.

The Blguolds are off now until next Saturday when they travel to River Falls to take on the Falcons. They will enter the game 8-4-1 and 5-1 in the WIAC. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
