Late Overtime Goal Pushes Women's Hockey to the Win

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - With the game on the line, the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team scored to push the game into extras, then drilled in another goal just seconds from the buzzer to pick up the 3-2 overtime win against Bethel University (Minn.) tonight at Hobbs Ice Center.

Both teams were silent in the first period, but the Blugolds got the scoring going 9:08 into the second. Emily Haluska (So.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) nailed her first goal of the season, while Katie Ward (Jr.-Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) earned her first assist. The Blugolds looked to carry the 1-0 lead into the third period, but Bethel snuck a goal in just as the buzzer concluded the period.

Bethel followed up its initial goal with another 12:37 into the period to grasp the lead. But with less than a minute to go in regulation, Kristin Faber (Sr.-Austin, Minn.), assisted by Dani Kerr (So.-Little Canada, Minn./Roseville), kept Blugold hopes alive with a goal that pushed the teams to overtime.

Each team made several attempts at breaking the stalemate, but just 12 seconds from the game ending in a tie, Christine Dickinson (Sr.-Layton, Utah/Shattuck-St. Mary's) broke through the Bethel defenses and recorded the go-ahead goal to pick up the 3-2 victory for Eau Claire.

In the win, the Blugolds just outshot Bethel 25-22 while Ally Derthick (Fr.-Knoxville, Tenn./New Hampton Prep) played Blugold goalie for 64:10 minutes and made 20 saves. Eau Claire was one-for-one on power play attempts while Bethel failed to convert on any of its three chances.

The victory pushes the Blugolds past .500 on the season with a 3-2-0 record.

This Friday the Blugolds will kick off a two-game series against Marian University (Wis.). Competition is set to begin at 8 p.m.
