Kabe named Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete

MADISON, Wis. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Quincy Kabe (Jr. - Buffalo, Minn.) has been named the recipient of the 2023 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Men's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete Award.

A junior from Buffalo, Minn., Kabe is double-majoring in accounting and finance, and boasts a 3.96 grade point average. He was named to the 2020-21 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American Second Team and is a two-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Kabe, who will graduate after three years at UW-Eau Claire, has been recognized on UW-Eau Claire's Dean's List numerous semesters and received academic scholarships. He was a Blugold Fellow and participated in honors research, while also serving as a student mentor.

Kabe placed second in three-meter diving and third in one-meter diving at this year's conference championship. A year ago, he received WIAC Diver of the Year recognition after winning the one-meter competition at the conference meet and finishing fourth in the three-meter event. He also qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet and was an alternate for the NCAA Division III Championship last season. Kabe has been named UW-Eau Claire's Diver of the Year in 2021 and 2022.

Kabe is a UW-Eau Claire Navigaters Leader and has served as a Residence Hall Advisor since 2021.

UW-La Crosse's Nicholas Litterer and UW-Stevens Point's Will Lennertz were also nominated for this year's scholar-athlete award.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference for 22 years from 1971-93. He oversaw the transition of the conference from NAIA to full NCAA membership. Sparger arrived at UW-Stout in 1959 and served the institution in a variety of capacities, including an assistant football and basketball coach, head wrestling coach and head football coach. He served as UW-Stout's athletics director from 1969-71 and was inducted into the WIAC Hall of Fame in 2012.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, he must be in his last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years. The award is based on academic achievements, athletics accomplishments and involvement in other campus activities, organizations and community service projects.
