Women's Outdoor Track & Field Takes Second in Season Opener

LA CROSSE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's outdoor track & field team kicked off the 2013 season taking second place out of the five teams at UW-La Crosse's Ashton May Invitational at Veterans Memorial Stadium today.

UW-La Crosse won the meet with 341 points while the Blugolds were second with 269.

The Blugolds won eight events on the day, five on the track and three in the field.

In the 100-meter dash, Megan Mulligan (So.-Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) took first with a time of 12.47.

Steph Sjostrom (Sr.-Champlin, Minn./Park) won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:44.12, edging her closest competitor by just one second.

The 100-meter hurdles were won by Erin Schoenfelder (Sr.-Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community), who finished the race in 14.82 seconds.

Ashlyn Mauer (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:50.23.

In the 4x400-meter relay, Brooke Patterson (So.-Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton), Calla Karl (So.-Frederic, Wis.), Steph Rouse (So.-Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) and Jessica Rupnow (Fr.-Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) won with a time of 4:00.88, almost 24 seconds in front of the rest of the field.

Stephanie Frempong-Longdon (Fr.-Minnetrista, Minn./Waconia) won the triple jump with a mark of 11.46 meters (37-7.25).

In the discus throw, Sam Anderson (Fr.-Forest Lake, Minn.) took first with a distance of 36.44 meters (119-6).

Caitlin Brendum (Sr.-River Falls, Wis.) won the hammer throw with a toss of 51.22 meters (168).

Next Saturday, the Blugolds will compete at the UW-Platteville Invitational, which gets underway at 11 a.m.
