Two Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – UW-Eau Claire outdoor track student-athletes Thurgood Dennis (So.-Allouez, Wis./Green Bay Notre Dame) and Erin Schoenfelder (Sr.-Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Dennis set a school record while winning two events to lead the sixth-ranked Blugolds to a fourth-place finish out of 11 teams at the UW-Platteville Invitational on April 13. In the 100-meter dash, Dennis took first with a time of 10.30 to break his own school record, which he set on May 26, 2012 at nationals. The previous best time was 10.47. He also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.40. His time in the 100-meter dash was the fastest in the conference and nation, while his time in the 200-meter dash was the best in the conference and third-best in the nation so far this year.

Schoenfelder won two events, the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles, to help the Blugolds to a third-place finish at the UW-Platteville Invitational on April 13. She finished the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.81, the best time in the conference and 15th-fastest time in the nation. She also won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.03, the second-fastest time in the WIAC and 14th-best in the nation. Schoenfelder and her teammates also took third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:57.57.
