EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team gave Luther College all they could handle, forcing overtime before falling to the Norse 1-0 here today at Bollinger Field.
Eau Claire falls to 3-8-1 with the loss while Luther improves to 12-1-0 on the season.
Luther was the aggressor in the first half outshooting Eau Claire 11-2. The Blugolds were able to withstand the Norse and go into halftime tied 0-0.
The second half saw a much more active Blugold squad that outshot the Norse 8-6. Eau Claire consistently challenged the Norse defense recording six shots on goal. Despite several scoring opportunities, the Blugolds were unable to score a goal and the game would move on to overtime.
Continuing their aggressive play, the Blugolds challenged the Norse early in overtime firing two shots but was unable to earn a goal. At 3:50 into overtime Melisse Chasse of Luther scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season giving the Norse a 1-0 victory.
For the game Luther outshot Eau Claire 19-12 however the Blugolds held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Eau Claire was called for eight fouls compared to seven for Luther. The Norse had an 8-2 corner kick advantage.
Goalie Rachel Griffiths (So.-Waunakee, WI) played all 96:10 in net saving five shots. Her record now stands at 0-2-0 on the season. Forward Tara Dennehy (Jr.-Eugene, OR/Churchill) led the Blugolds taking four shots followed by midfielder Ashley Seymour (Jr.-Verona, WI) with three.
The Blugolds return to conference play on this Saturday, October 11 when they host UW-Stevens Point at Bollinger Field on Alumni Weekend. Action is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
